Arrows, Twenty Five Years Without a Win

Formed by a breakaway group from Shadow, Arrows raced for a quarter century, came close several times and never won a Grand Prix.

Arrows was founded in Milton Keynes by Franco Ambrosio, Alan Rees, Jackie Oliver, Dave Wass and Tony Southgate after they left Shadow, and the team took its name from their initials. It reached the grid at the 1978 Brazilian Grand Prix within three months of forming, and it raced in every season from 1978 to 2002, called Footwork from 1991 to 1996. Across those 25 seasons it started 382 Grands Prix.

Riccardo Patrese gave the team its early high points, finishing second three times and taking pole at Long Beach in 1981. Thierry Boutsen was second at Imola in 1985, and Damon Hill came within reach of victory in Hungary in 1997 before finishing second. Derek Warwick, Eddie Cheever and Jos Verstappen were among its many drivers. The team, later run from Leafield, made its final entry at the 2002 German Grand Prix.
