Third in Austria, Four Wins at Daytona

Rolf Stommelen raced in Formula One from 1969 to 1978, finishing third at the 1970 Austrian Grand Prix, and was a sports car star.

Born in Siegen, Rolf Stommelen built his reputation with Porsche in sports cars, winning the Targa Florio in 1967. He made his Formula One debut in a Lotus at the 1969 German Grand Prix, and in 1970, driving a Brabham, he finished third at the Austrian Grand Prix after starting seventeenth.

His later seasons were spent with smaller outfits, including Surtees, Eifelland, Lola, Hill, Hesketh and Arrows, and his last Grand Prix was the 1978 Canadian Grand Prix, his 54th start. Away from Formula One he won the 24 Hours of Daytona four times. He was killed in a crash during a sports car race at Riverside in 1983.
