Graham Hill's Own Team

The two time champion founded his own team in 1973, moved from customer cars to his own design, and saw it end in tragedy.

Graham Hill left Brabham late in 1972 to start his own team, working from a warehouse in Hanworth, West London, with sponsorship from Imperial Tobacco's Embassy brand. He raced a customer Shadow in 1973, with ninth in Belgium his best finish, and a Lola in 1974, when he scored a point in Sweden.

For 1975 designer Andy Smallman developed the Hill GH1. At the Spanish Grand Prix Rolf Stommelen was leading when his rear wing mounting failed and his car went into the crowd, killing four people. Hill retired from driving that season and young Tony Brise took his place, finishing sixth in Sweden, while Alan Jones was fifth in Germany. In the autumn of 1975 Hill, Brise and several team members were killed when their light aircraft crashed, and the team came to an end.
