Three wins in Williams blue

Thierry Boutsen built a reputation for consistency at Arrows and Benetton, then won three Grands Prix for Williams in 1989 and 1990.

Thierry Boutsen was born in the Brussels area of Belgium on July 13, 1957. He won the Belgian Formula Ford title in 1978 with 15 wins from 18 races, then finished second in the European Formula 3 championship in 1980 and second again in European Formula 2 in 1981. He also won in sports cars, including the first Group C race at Monza in 1983.

Arrows gave him his Formula 1 debut at his home race, the 1983 Belgian Grand Prix. His best result in four seasons with the team came at Imola in 1985, where he was classified second after the leader was disqualified. In 1986 he also won the World Sportscar Championship title with the Brun team. He moved to Benetton for 1987, and in 1988 he scored five third places and finished fourth in the championship.

Frank Williams signed him for 1989. That year Boutsen won the Canadian Grand Prix for his first victory and later won the Australian Grand Prix. In 1990 he took the only pole position of his career at the Hungarian Grand Prix and converted it into his third win.

He spent 1991 and 1992 with Ligier and finished his Formula 1 career with Jordan, making his last start at the 1993 Belgian Grand Prix. Our record shows 163 starts, 3 wins, 1 pole position, 1 fastest lap and 15 podiums over 11 seasons. He raced at Le Mans ten times, twice finishing second, and later went into the aviation business in Monaco while co founding the Boutsen Racing touring car team.
