The Clothing Company That Won the Title

The Benetton family turned the Toleman team into a race winner and, with Michael Schumacher, a world champion in 1994 and 1995.

The Benetton clothing group came to Formula One as a sponsor, backing Tyrrell, Alfa Romeo and Toleman in the early and middle 1980s. In 1985 the family bought the Toleman team outright and formed Benetton Formula. The car Toleman had designed for 1986 became the first Benetton, now with BMW turbo engines, and it raced from the 1986 Brazilian Grand Prix. The team was based at Witney until 1991 and at Enstone from 1992.

Gerhard Berger won in Mexico that first season, the team's first victory. Ford engines followed from 1987, and Alessandro Nannini and Nelson Piquet added wins as Benetton became a regular front runner. Michael Schumacher arrived during 1991, and with him the team rose to the top.

Schumacher won the drivers' championship in 1994 with Ford power and again in 1995 after the switch to Renault engines, and in 1995 Benetton also won the constructors' title. He won 19 races for the team, eight in 1994 and nine of the team's 11 in 1995, with Johnny Herbert winning the other two that year. Schumacher left for Ferrari, and Benetton's last victory came with Berger at the 1997 German Grand Prix.

Renault bought the team in 2000, though it kept the Benetton name for two more seasons. Its final race as Benetton was the 2001 Japanese Grand Prix, and in 2002 it became Renault. Over 16 seasons Benetton started 260 World Championship races and won 27.
