Third at San Marino from Sixteenth

JJ Lehto raced in Formula One from 1989 to 1994, finishing third at the 1991 San Marino Grand Prix, then won Le Mans twice.

Born in Espoo, JJ Lehto dominated the 1988 British Formula Three Championship and made his Formula One debut with Onyx at the 1989 Portuguese Grand Prix. His early seasons brought several failures to qualify.

Driving a Dallara for Scuderia Italia in 1991, he finished third at the San Marino Grand Prix after starting sixteenth, the only podium of his career. He joined Sauber for the team's first season in 1993, finishing fifth on its debut in South Africa and fourth at San Marino. In 1994 he raced for Benetton and then Sauber again, ending at the Australian Grand Prix with 62 starts from 70 entries. He went on to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1995 and 2005 and later worked as a television commentator.
