Onyx Grand Prix

Former Formula One constructor from Britain that competed in the 1989 and 1990 Formula One seasons

Onyx and Its One Podium

A long serving junior formula team from West Sussex, Onyx reached Formula One for two seasons and found a podium in its first.

Onyx began as Onyx Race Engineering, a partnership between Mike Earle and Greg Field, and spent years in the junior formulas, including a spell running the works March team in Formula 2. Based at Westergate House in West Sussex, it moved up to the World Championship with its own Ford powered car in 1989.

That first season brought the high point. Stefan Johansson finished third at the Portuguese Grand Prix, the only podium the team ever scored. Bertrand Gachot shared the early drives, and JJ Lehto and Gregor Foitek also raced for Onyx. The team started 17 Grands Prix across 1989 and 1990, and its final entry came midway through 1990, after which it left the championship.
