Jenson Button and the Brawn season

Jenson Button won for the first time in his seventh season, then took six of the first seven races of 2009 with Brawn on the way to the title.

Jenson Button was born in Frome, Somerset, on 19 January 1980. He started karting at eight and moved through British Formula Ford and British Formula 3 before Williams signed him for the 2000 season, with his debut coming at the Australian Grand Prix. He then raced for Benetton, which became Renault, and joined BAR in 2003.

BAR gave him his first podiums, ten of them in 2004 when he finished third in the championship. The team became Honda for 2006, and in Hungary that August he won a Grand Prix for the first time. Two seasons without a podium followed, and when Honda withdrew from the sport at the end of 2008 he was left without a drive until the team was bought out and relaunched as Brawn GP.

The new team started at full speed. Button won six of the first seven races of 2009, led the standings all year and sealed the championship in Brazil, while Brawn took the constructors' title. He moved to McLaren for 2010 alongside Lewis Hamilton, won twice in his first season there, and finished runner up in 2011 after wins in Canada, Hungary and Japan. Three more victories came in 2012, the last of them in Brazil.

He retired at the end of 2016, returning once to stand in for Fernando Alonso at Monaco in 2017. His record shows 306 starts, 15 wins, 8 pole positions and 50 podiums. After Formula 1 he won the 2018 Super GT title in Japan with Naoki Yamamoto and later drove part time in the NASCAR Cup Series.

1 world titles, 15 wins, 8 pole positions, 306 starts.
