Three Podiums Across Ten Years

Alexander Wurz raced in Formula One between 1997 and 2007 for Benetton, McLaren and Williams, with podiums spread across a decade.

Born in Waidhofen an der Thaya, Alexander Wurz won the 24 Hours of Le Mans with Joest in 1996, the year before Benetton called him up to stand in for Gerhard Berger. He made his debut at the 1997 Canadian Grand Prix and finished third at the British Grand Prix in only his third race.

He then raced for Benetton through 2000, with five fourth places in 1998, before years as a test driver. A single McLaren appearance at the 2005 San Marino Grand Prix brought another third place, and a full season with Williams in 2007 included third in Canada from nineteenth on the grid. He retired after the 2007 Chinese Grand Prix with 69 starts and three podiums, won Le Mans again in 2009 with Peugeot and later chaired the Grand Prix Drivers' Association.
