Johnny Herbert's three surprise wins

Johnny Herbert raced for seven teams across twelve seasons, won twice for Benetton in 1995 and gave Stewart its victory in 1999.

Johnny Herbert was born in Brentwood, England, on 25 June 1964. He won the Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch in 1985, which caught the attention of Eddie Jordan, and together they won the 1987 British Formula 3 championship. He moved on to International Formula 3000 with Jordan in 1988.

Benetton gave him his Formula 1 debut at the 1989 Brazilian Grand Prix, and he finished fourth. He made further starts that year for Benetton and Tyrrell, then spent most of the early 1990s at Lotus, scoring points but never reaching the podium. Late in 1994 he moved to Ligier and then back to Benetton for the final races.

The 1995 season, as teammate to Michael Schumacher at Benetton, brought his breakthrough. He won his home race, the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, then the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, and finished fourth in the championship. Three seasons at Sauber followed, with a podium in 1996 and another in 1997. In 1999 he joined Stewart and won a rain affected European Grand Prix at the Nürburgring, ahead of Jarno Trulli and teammate Rubens Barrichello.

He spent 2000 with Jaguar Racing and retired from Formula 1 after the Malaysian Grand Prix that October. His record shows 160 starts, 3 wins and 7 podiums. Outside Formula 1 he won the 1991 24 Hours of Le Mans with Mazda and the 2002 12 Hours of Sebring with Audi, and from 2012 to 2022 he worked as a pundit for Sky Sports F1.
