Jean Alesi

French racecar driver

One famous win in Montreal

Jean Alesi stood on the podium 32 times across 13 seasons, and his single victory came for Ferrari at the 1995 Canadian Grand Prix.

Jean Alesi was born in Avignon, France, on June 11, 1964. He took up karting at 16 and moved into single seaters at 20, winning the French Formula Three championship in 1987. He then moved to International Formula 3000 and won the 1989 title with Jordan.

That same year Tyrrell brought him into Formula 1, and on his debut at the 1989 French Grand Prix he finished fourth. In 1990 he scored his first podium at the opening round and added another at Monaco. Ferrari signed him for 1991 as teammate to Alain Prost, and he stayed for five seasons, twice finishing fifth in the championship.

His victory came at the 1995 Canadian Grand Prix. He had stood on the podium 15 times before that day, which shares the record for the most podiums before a first win, and it proved to be the only win of his career. For 1996 he swapped seats with Michael Schumacher and moved to Benetton, scoring 13 podiums across two seasons there. Two years with Sauber followed, including a podium at the 1998 Belgian Grand Prix, then a spell with Prost before he joined Jordan from the 2001 Hungarian Grand Prix. His last start was the 2001 Japanese Grand Prix.

Our record shows 201 starts, 1 win, 2 pole positions, 4 fastest laps and 32 podiums across 13 seasons. He went on to race in the DTM from 2002 to 2006, entered the Indianapolis 500 in 2012, and has served as an ambassador for Pirelli since 2013. He was made a Knight of the Legion of Honour in 2006.

0 world titles, 1 wins, 2 pole positions, 201 starts.
