Marc Surer raced in Formula One from 1979 to 1986 after winning the European Formula Two title, with two fourth places as his best results.

He was runner up in German Formula Three in 1976 and won the European Formula Two title with the BMW Junior Team in 1979, the year Ensign gave him his Formula One debut at the Italian Grand Prix.

Spells with ATS, Ensign and Theodore followed, and in 1981 he finished fourth for Ensign in Brazil. He then raced for Arrows from 1982 to 1984 and moved to Brabham in 1985, taking another fourth at the Italian Grand Prix. His Formula One career ended with Arrows at the 1986 Belgian Grand Prix after 82 starts, and he later became a well known television commentator in Germany.
