Renault Podiums and a Le Mans Win

Derek Warwick raced in Formula One from 1981 to 1993, with four podiums for Renault in 1984 and later success in sports cars.

Born in Hampshire, Derek Warwick came up through stock car racing and British Formula Three before joining the young Toleman team in 1981. He entered 12 races that year but started only one, the season finale at Las Vegas, and points arrived in 1983.

A move to Renault in 1984 produced the best results of his career: third in South Africa, second in Belgium and Britain, and third in Germany. Later seasons took him to Brabham, Arrows, Lotus and finally Footwork in 1993, his last Formula One year, by which point he had made 147 starts with four podiums. Away from Grands Prix he won the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the World Sportscar Championship with Peugeot in 1992, and he later served as president of the British Racing Drivers Club.
