From Formula One to Indianapolis

Eddie Cheever started 132 Grands Prix between 1978 and 1989, with nine podiums, before winning the Indianapolis 500 as owner and driver.

Born in Phoenix and raised largely in Rome, Eddie Cheever first entered Formula One in 1978, failing to qualify a Theodore before starting the South African Grand Prix for Hesketh. After a year with Osella in 1980 and one with Tyrrell, he joined Ligier in 1982 and took second at the Detroit Grand Prix along with two thirds.

His most productive year was 1983 with Renault, when he finished second in Canada and third in France, Belgium and Italy. Spells with Alfa Romeo, a single race for Lola and three seasons at Arrows followed, with late podiums at the 1988 Italian Grand Prix and the 1989 United States Grand Prix. He finished with 132 starts and nine podiums, then moved to American open wheel racing and won the 1998 Indianapolis 500 with his own team.
