Standing In for Schumacher

Mika Salo raced in Formula One from 1994 to 2002, and his two podiums came while deputizing at Ferrari in 1999.

Born in Helsinki, Mika Salo raced in British Formula 3 and then in Japan before Lotus gave him his Formula One debut at the 1994 Japanese Grand Prix. Three seasons with Tyrrell followed, then a year with Arrows in 1998.

In 1999 he first filled in at BAR and then took the place of the injured Michael Schumacher at Ferrari for six races. He finished second at the German Grand Prix and third at the Italian Grand Prix, the only podiums of his career. After a season with Sauber in 2000, he drove for Toyota in its first year in 2002, ending at the Japanese Grand Prix with 109 starts. In sports cars he later won the GT2 class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2008 and 2009.
