Asia's First Formula One Podium

Aguri Suzuki raced in Formula One from 1988 to 1995, and his third place at Suzuka in 1990 was the first podium for an Asian driver.

Born in Tokyo, Aguri Suzuki won the Japanese Formula 3000 Championship in 1988 and made his Formula One debut with Lola at that year's Japanese Grand Prix. A season with Zakspeed in 1989 brought 16 entries and no starts.

Back with Lola in 1990, he finished third at his home race, the Japanese Grand Prix, becoming the first Asian driver on a Formula One podium. He went on to race for Footwork in 1992 and 1993, made a single start for Jordan in 1994 and finished with Ligier at the 1995 Japanese Grand Prix, after 65 starts from 88 entries. He later founded racing teams, including the Super Aguri Formula One team that competed from 2006 to 2008.
