Faenza's Little Team That Lasted

Giancarlo Minardi's team from Faenza spent 21 seasons near the back of the grid and became one of the best loved outfits in the paddock.

Minardi grew out of Giancarlo Minardi's racing operation in Faenza, Italy, and reached the World Championship in 1985. It stayed for 21 seasons and started 340 Grands Prix without a podium. Its best results were three fourth places: Pierluigi Martini twice in 1991, at the San Marino and Portuguese Grands Prix, and Christian Fittipaldi in South Africa in 1993. Martini made more starts for the team than anyone else.

The cars were respected as clever designs built on a small budget, and the team was known for giving young drivers a chance. Fernando Alonso, Mark Webber, Jarno Trulli and Giancarlo Fisichella all raced for it on the way up. To keep it alive, Minardi sold the team to Paul Stoddart, who ran it until Red Bull bought it after the 2005 season and renamed it Scuderia Toro Rosso.
