Ukyo Katayama raced in Formula One from 1992 to 1997, scoring all of his points with Tyrrell in 1994.

Born in Tokyo, Ukyo Katayama raced in France and then in Japanese Formula 3000 before joining the Larrousse team for his Formula One debut at the 1992 South African Grand Prix. A move to Tyrrell followed in 1993, the start of four seasons with the team.

His best year was 1994, when he finished fifth at the Brazilian and San Marino Grands Prix and sixth at the British Grand Prix. He spent his final season with Minardi in 1997 and retired after the European Grand Prix with 95 starts. In 1999 he finished second overall at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and he later managed a professional cycling team in Japan.
