Two Spells in Formula One, Two CART Titles

Alex Zanardi raced in Formula One between 1991 and 1999, won two CART championships and later four Paralympic gold medals.

Born in Bologna, Alex Zanardi won the FIA European F3 Cup in 1990 and made his Formula One debut with Jordan at the 1991 Spanish Grand Prix. After a few races for Minardi he joined Lotus, and his only point came with sixth at the 1993 Brazilian Grand Prix.

He then went to America and won the CART title in 1997 and 1998 with Chip Ganassi Racing, earning a return to Formula One with Williams in 1999, which ended at the Japanese Grand Prix after 41 career starts. A crash in a CART race in Germany in 2001 cost him both legs, yet he went back to touring car racing, won four races in the World Touring Car Championship and took four Paralympic gold medals in handcycling. He died in 2026.
