Fernando Alonso

Spanish racing driver

Spain's champion and the longest career

Fernando Alonso won back to back titles with Renault, added Le Mans and endurance honors, and has started more Grands Prix than anyone.

Fernando Alonso was born in Oviedo, Spain, on 29 July 1981. He started karting at seven, won the Euro Open by Nissan in 1999, and reached Formula 1 with Minardi at the 2001 Australian Grand Prix. After a season without points he spent a year as Renault's test driver before racing for the team in 2003, when he became the youngest polesitter in Malaysia and the youngest winner in Hungary at the time.

Seven wins in 2005 made him Spain's first world champion, and seven more in 2006 let him defend the title against Michael Schumacher. A single season at McLaren in 2007 brought four wins and third place, one point behind champion Kimi Räikkönen. He returned to Renault for two years and then joined Ferrari in 2010, where he was runner up to Sebastian Vettel in 2010, 2012 and 2013.

From 2015 to 2018 he drove McLaren Honda and McLaren Renault cars without a podium, then left Formula 1 for endurance racing. With Toyota he won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2018 and 2019 and the World Endurance Championship, and he also won the 24 Hours of Daytona. He came back with Alpine in 2021, finishing third in Qatar, and moved to Aston Martin in 2023, when eight podiums helped him to fourth in the standings.

Through the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix he had 440 starts, the most in the history of the championship, along with 32 wins, 22 pole positions, 26 fastest laps and 106 podiums. His 2026 season with Aston Martin and Honda power is still in progress.

2 world titles, 32 wins, 22 pole positions, 440 starts.
