Alpine, the Latest Name at Enstone

Renault's works team took the name of its sports car brand in 2021, won in Hungary that first summer, and now races with Mercedes power.

Alpine is the newest name for one of the longest running teams in Formula One. The organization at Enstone in Oxfordshire began as Toleman in 1981, became Benetton in 1986, Renault in 2002, Lotus in 2012 and Renault again in 2016. For 2021 Renault renamed it after Alpine, its sports car brand, to promote that marque, while the engines continued to come from Renault's works at Viry Châtillon in France. The team holds a French license.

Alpine made its debut at the 2021 Bahrain Grand Prix with Esteban Ocon and the returning two time champion Fernando Alonso. At the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix Ocon won from eighth on the grid, the team's only victory under the Alpine name, and Alonso added a third place in Qatar later that year.

Further podiums followed for Ocon at Monaco in 2023, for Pierre Gasly at the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix, and for both drivers together at the 2024 São Paulo Grand Prix, where Ocon finished second and Gasly third. Renault ended its engine program after 2025, and in 2026 Alpine began racing with Mercedes engines, with Gasly and Franco Colapinto driving. Gasly took the team's first pole position at the 2026 Italian Grand Prix at Monza.

Through the rounds held so far in 2026, Alpine has started 129 World Championship races, with one win and six podium finishes. The Alpine name itself reaches back further, to the A350 Grand Prix car the company built and tested in 1968, a project abandoned when its engine proved too weak.
