Esteban Ocon's Hungarian breakthrough

Esteban Ocon came through the Mercedes junior ranks, won the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix for Alpine, and now races for Haas.

Esteban Ocon was born in Évreux, Normandy, France, on 17 September 1996, and began karting at nine, winning French titles in the Minime and Cadet classes. He moved into single seaters in 2012 and won the 2014 FIA Formula 3 European Championship with Prema, ahead of Tom Blomqvist and Max Verstappen, then the 2015 GP3 Series with ART, taking 14 podiums in 18 races.

As a member of the Mercedes Junior Team, he made his Formula 1 debut with Manor at the 2016 Belgian Grand Prix, finishing the season with the team. He then raced for Force India, renamed Racing Point during 2018, for two seasons alongside Sergio Pérez, before spending 2019 as a Mercedes reserve driver.

Ocon returned with Renault in 2020 and took his first podium with second place at the Sakhir Grand Prix. The team became Alpine for 2021, and at the Hungarian Grand Prix that August he won his first Grand Prix, with Fernando Alonso as his teammate. He added a third place at Monaco in 2023 and a second place in the rain affected São Paulo Grand Prix in 2024, the same season he set his first fastest lap, in the United States.

He left Alpine after the 2024 Qatar Grand Prix and joined Haas for 2025, alongside Oliver Bearman. Through the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix his record stood at 195 starts, 1 win, 1 fastest lap and 4 podiums, and his 2026 season with Haas is still in progress.
