The 2024 season

Verstappen Holds On, McLaren Returns

Max Verstappen dominated the spring and survived a competitive autumn for a fourth title, while McLaren beat Ferrari to the constructors' crown.

The longest season yet, twenty four Grands Prix from Bahrain on the 2nd of March to Abu Dhabi on the 8th of December, told two stories at once. In the first, Max Verstappen carried on where he had left off and won seven of the opening ten races for Red Bull Racing. In the second, everyone else caught up. Seven different drivers won during the year, and six of them won more than once, which had never happened before.

The early pattern showed only small cracks. Verstappen retired with a brake problem in Australia, where Carlos Sainz Jr. won for Ferrari two weeks after surgery for appendicitis had kept him out of the previous race. Lando Norris took his first win in Miami. Charles Leclerc won at Monaco, where no Monégasque driver had won since Louis Chiron in 1931, so the locals had been patient. Mercedes found form in the summer: George Russell won in Austria, and Lewis Hamilton won his home race at Silverstone and then in Belgium, where Russell crossed the line first but was disqualified because his car was underweight. Oscar Piastri won for the first time in Hungary.

From the summer onward the McLaren was consistently quicker than the Red Bull. Norris won at Zandvoort and in Singapore, Piastri in Azerbaijan, and Ferrari added victories for Leclerc at Monza and in Austin and for Sainz in Mexico City. Norris had cut the gap to 47 points after Mexico, but Verstappen had banked enough in the spring to absorb the pressure, a championship lived partly on savings. His most striking drive came in a wet São Paulo Grand Prix, where he started seventeenth and won.

Fifth place in Las Vegas, with Norris sixth, made Verstappen champion for the fourth year running. He finished on 437 points to Norris's 374, with Leclerc third on 356. The constructors' title went to the final race in Abu Dhabi, where Norris won and McLaren finished on 666 points to Ferrari's 652. It was McLaren's first constructors' championship since 1998 and the first for anyone other than Red Bull Racing or Mercedes since Brawn in 2009. Red Bull Racing, champions the year before, fell to third. The season was also Hamilton's last with Mercedes, after twelve together.
