Lewis Hamilton

British racing driver

Seven titles and a record haul of wins

From a McLaren youth program to Mercedes dominance and a move to Ferrari, Lewis Hamilton has rewritten the record book across twenty seasons.

Lewis Hamilton was born in Stevenage, England, on January 7, 1985, and races as a British driver. He began in karting as a young boy and was signed to the McLaren young driver program in 1998. Titles in the Formula 3 Euro Series and the GP2 Series followed, and McLaren gave him a race seat for 2007. He made his debut at the 2007 Australian Grand Prix and became the first black driver to compete in Formula 1.

His first season was remarkable by any measure. He won the 2007 Canadian Grand Prix for his first victory, added three more wins that year, and finished one point behind champion Kimi Räikkönen. A year later he was champion himself, settling the 2008 title with a pass on the final lap of the final race. He stayed with McLaren through 2012 and won races in every one of those seasons.

In 2013 he moved to Mercedes and won the Hungarian Grand Prix in his first year there. When new engine rules arrived in 2014 the team became the force of the era, and Hamilton took the championship in 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020. That made seven titles, level with Michael Schumacher. He finished runner up to Max Verstappen in 2021, and in 2024, his last year with Mercedes, he won the British Grand Prix for a ninth time, a record at that race.

Hamilton joined Ferrari for 2025 and won the 2026 Barcelona Catalunya Grand Prix in red. Through the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix our record shows 395 starts, 106 wins, 104 pole positions and 207 podiums, all with McLaren, Mercedes and Ferrari. He was knighted in the 2021 New Year Honours.

7 world titles, 106 wins, 104 pole positions, 395 starts.
