From Williams apprentice to Mercedes winner

George Russell won the GP3 and Formula 2 titles as a rookie, served three seasons at Williams, and has won eight Grands Prix with Mercedes.

George Russell was born in King's Lynn, England, on February 15, 1998, and races as a British driver. He began karting at seven and won the junior European karting championship in 2011 and 2012. In cars he won the 2014 BRDC F4 Championship, then took the 2017 GP3 Series and the 2018 FIA Formula 2 Championship with ART, each in his first season in the category.

A Mercedes junior since 2017, he joined Williams for 2019 and made his debut at the 2019 Australian Grand Prix. In 2020 he stood in for Lewis Hamilton at the Sakhir Grand Prix and led much of the race before a team error and a puncture cost him the win. His first podium came with Williams at the shortened 2021 Belgian Grand Prix.

Mercedes promoted him for 2022 to partner Hamilton. That year he took his first pole in Hungary and his first win at the 2022 São Paulo Grand Prix, finishing fourth in the championship. He won the Austrian and Las Vegas Grands Prix in 2024, a year in which he was also disqualified after crossing the line first in Belgium, and won in Canada and Singapore in 2025.

With new rules in 2026 Mercedes became the fastest team, and Russell has won the Australian, Austrian and Azerbaijan Grands Prix this season. Through the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix our record shows 167 starts, 8 wins, 12 pole positions, 13 fastest laps and 32 podiums across eight seasons, all with Williams and Mercedes.
