Oscar Piastri's rapid rise at McLaren

Oscar Piastri won three junior titles in three years, then won nine Grands Prix with McLaren in his first three seasons.

Oscar Piastri was born in Melbourne, Australia, on 6 April 2001. He raced radio controlled cars before turning to karting at ten, and he moved to England as a teenager to continue his career. His run through the junior categories was quick: the 2019 Formula Renault Eurocup with R ace GP, then the 2020 FIA Formula 3 and 2021 FIA Formula 2 titles with Prema, three championships in successive seasons.

After time in the Alpine Academy he joined McLaren for 2023 alongside Lando Norris, making his debut at the Bahrain Grand Prix. His first podium came in Japan that year, and he added a second before the season was out. In 2024 he won the Hungarian Grand Prix for his first victory and followed it with a win in Azerbaijan, finishing fourth in the championship.

The 2025 season brought seven more wins, in China, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Miami, Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands, along with his first pole position, in Shanghai. He finished on the podium 16 times and ended the year third, in a close fight with Norris and Max Verstappen.

Through the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix his record stood at 83 starts, 9 wins, 6 pole positions, 9 fastest laps and 28 podiums, every one of those starts with McLaren. The 2026 season had brought two podiums by that point and is still being decided.

0 world titles, 9 wins, 6 pole positions, 83 starts.
