The 2008 season

Decided at the Last Corner

Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa traded the lead all year, and the championship turned on a pass on the last lap in Brazil, at the very last corner.

For a few moments in November, Felipe Massa was world champion. Then Lewis Hamilton reached the final corner in Brazil. It was the last act of an eighteen round season, begun in Australia in March, in which McLaren and Ferrari shared the big prizes and seven different drivers won. Traction control was gone, Singapore staged the championship's first night race, and Valencia's new street circuit took over the European Grand Prix.

Hamilton won the opener from pole, but Ferrari took the next four, shared between Kimi Räikkönen and Massa, whose win in Turkey was his third there in a row. Hamilton then won Monaco despite a puncture picked up brushing a barrier, and the summer swung to and fro. Robert Kubica took his first win, for BMW Sauber, in Canada after Hamilton and Räikkönen collided in the pit lane, not the usual place to lose championship points. Heikki Kovalainen won for the first time in Hungary when Massa's engine failed near the end, and at Monza Sebastian Vettel, in a Toro Rosso, became the youngest pole sitter and winner the sport had seen.

The autumn brought controversy. Hamilton crossed the line first at Spa but was penalized 25 seconds for gaining an advantage in his duel with Räikkönen, and the win went to Massa. In Singapore Massa led from pole until Nelson Piquet Jr.'s crash brought out the safety car; at his pit stop the fuel hose stayed attached, and he dropped to last. Fernando Alonso won from fifteenth on the grid. A year later Piquet's crash was revealed to have been deliberate, and Renault's team principal, Flavio Briatore, resigned.

Hamilton won in China and arrived in Brazil seven points ahead. Massa won his home race from pole, and when Vettel passed Hamilton late on, dropping him to sixth, the title was Massa's. On the final lap, at the final corner, Hamilton passed Timo Glock, whose Toyota was struggling for grip on dry tires, and fifth place made him champion by 98 points to 97.

Hamilton became the youngest champion to that point, the first black champion, and the first Briton to win it in twelve years, since Damon Hill. Ferrari took the constructors' title, its most recent. Honda withdrew at the end of the year, and Ross Brawn took over the team, which raced on as Brawn GP. The season has had a long afterlife: in 2024 Massa filed a lawsuit at the High Court in London over the Singapore result and its effect on the championship.
