Kovalainen, the hundredth winner

Heikki Kovalainen won the 2008 Hungarian Grand Prix for McLaren, becoming the 100th different driver to win a World Championship race.

Heikki Kovalainen was born in Suomussalmi, Finland, on 19 October 1981. He raced karts from 1991 to 2000, finishing that period as Nordic champion and Finnish Kart Driver of the Year. Backed by Renault's driver development program, he moved through British Formula Renault and Formula Three, won the World Series by Nissan, and finished runner up in GP2.

Renault made him its full time test driver in 2006 and gave him a race seat for 2007, with his debut at the Australian Grand Prix. His first podium came later that season, second place at the Japanese Grand Prix.

For 2008 he joined McLaren alongside Lewis Hamilton. He took his first pole position at Silverstone, and at the Hungaroring that August he won the Hungarian Grand Prix, becoming the 100th different driver to win a championship Grand Prix. He finished on the podium three times that year and stayed with McLaren for 2009.

In 2010 he moved to the new Team Lotus, which became Caterham for 2012, and spent three seasons racing toward the back of the field. His final Formula 1 appearances came at the last two races of 2013, standing in for Kimi Räikkönen at Lotus. His record shows 111 starts, 1 win, 1 pole position, 2 fastest laps and 4 podiums. He then moved to Japan and won the 2016 Super GT championship with SARD and Kohei Hirate, and he has since turned to rallying.

0 world titles, 1 wins, 1 pole positions, 111 starts.
