The Iceman's long road

Kimi Räikkönen jumped to Formula 1 after barely two seasons in cars, won the 2007 title by one point and raced on until 2021.

Kimi Räikkönen was born in Espoo, Finland, on October 17, 1979. He started karting at ten and moved into single seaters in 1999. After dominating the 2000 British Formula Renault championship with Manor, he was signed by Sauber and made his Formula 1 debut at the 2001 Australian Grand Prix.

McLaren took him on for 2002, and he finished on the podium in his first race for them. His first win came at the 2003 Malaysian Grand Prix and he ended that year second to Michael Schumacher. He won once in 2004, at the Belgian Grand Prix, then won seven races in 2005 while finishing second to Fernando Alonso.

Räikkönen moved to Ferrari for 2007 and won six races, taking the title by a single point over Alonso and Lewis Hamilton. He added two wins in 2008 and a Belgian Grand Prix win in 2009 before leaving Formula 1 to compete in the World Rally Championship in 2010 and 2011. He returned with Lotus and won the 2012 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and the 2013 Australian Grand Prix, then rejoined Ferrari from 2014 to 2018. His last victory, at the 2018 United States Grand Prix, came 114 races after his previous one.

He finished his career with Alfa Romeo, retiring after the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Our record lists 349 starts, 21 wins, 18 pole positions, 46 fastest laps and 103 podiums across 19 seasons. Since then he has made NASCAR Cup Series appearances and has served as team principal of Kawasaki in the Motocross World Championship.
