The 2020 season

Seventeen Races and a Seventh Title

Rebuilt around the COVID 19 pandemic, a seventeen race season brought new venues, surprise winners and Lewis Hamilton level with Michael Schumacher on seven titles.

The seventieth anniversary season was meant to be the longest ever, at twenty two Grands Prix. The COVID 19 pandemic pushed the start from March to July instead, and the calendar was rebuilt one race at a time. Seventeen rounds were held, from Austria on the 5th of July to Abu Dhabi on the 13th of December. The first eight took place behind closed doors, and Austria, Silverstone and Bahrain each hosted two races on consecutive weekends, which saved on travel if not on novelty. The improvised schedule also reached places the sport had not visited in years, or ever: Mugello for the first Tuscan Grand Prix, the Nürburgring, absent since 2013, Imola, absent since 2006, and Portimão, which had never held a Grand Prix.
