Checo Pérez and the long wait

Sergio Pérez waited ten seasons for his first Grand Prix win, then won six times and finished runner up in 2023 with Red Bull.

Sergio Pérez was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, on 26 January 1990, and began karting at six. He moved to Europe as a teenager, won the national class of British Formula 3 in 2007, and finished runner up in the 2010 GP2 Series with Addax. As a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy he joined Sauber for 2011, making his debut at the Australian Grand Prix.

In 2012 he took three podiums for Sauber, in Malaysia, Canada and Italy, which earned him a move to McLaren for 2013. That season brought no podiums, and he joined Force India in 2014. He became a reliable points scorer there, adding five podiums by the time the team was renamed Racing Point in 2018.

His first win finally came at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix, after he had dropped to last on the opening lap, and he finished fourth in the championship that year. Red Bull signed him for 2021 as teammate to Max Verstappen, and he won in Azerbaijan in his first season with the team. In 2022 he won at Monaco and in Singapore, took his first pole position in Saudi Arabia, and finished third. Wins in Saudi Arabia and Azerbaijan in 2023 helped him to second in the standings behind Verstappen.

After a winless 2024 he left Red Bull, sat out 2025, and returned in 2026 with the new Cadillac team, a season still in progress. Through the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix he had 296 starts, 6 wins, 3 pole positions, 12 fastest laps and 39 podiums.

0 world titles, 6 wins, 3 pole positions, 296 starts.
