Enzo Coloni's Hard Years in Formula One

A champion Formula Three team from Umbria, Coloni spent five seasons in Formula One and rarely made it past qualifying.

Coloni was founded by racing driver Enzo Coloni, nicknamed the wolf, at Passignano sul Trasimeno near Perugia. It won the Italian Formula Three title three years running and then saw the coming ban on turbo engines as a chance to move up. Its yellow Cosworth powered car appeared at the 1987 Italian Grand Prix, and Nicola Larini gave the team its first start in Spain that year.

Racing as Enzo Coloni Racing Car Systems, the team started just 13 Grands Prix from 1987 to 1991, failing to qualify or prequalify far more often. Gabriele Tarquini's eighth place in Canada in 1988 was its best finish, and Roberto Moreno also drove for it. After a season of failed prequalifying in 1991, Coloni sold the team to Andrea Sassetti, who turned it into Andrea Moda. Under Enzo's son Paolo, Coloni went on to success in Formula 3000 and GP2.
