Forty Failed Attempts to Qualify

Gabriele Tarquini entered 78 Grands Prix between 1987 and 1995 but started only 38, before becoming a touring car world champion.

Born in Giulianova, Gabriele Tarquini made his Formula One debut with Osella at the 1987 San Marino Grand Prix. His career was spent largely with small teams such as Coloni, AGS and Fondmetal, where reaching the grid was often the main challenge.

His single championship point came with sixth at the 1989 Mexican Grand Prix for AGS. He holds the record for the most failed attempts to qualify, 40, and his 78 entries produced 38 starts, the last a one off appearance for Tyrrell at the 1995 European Grand Prix. Touring cars brought him far greater success: the 1994 British title with Alfa Romeo, the 2009 World Touring Car Championship with SEAT and the 2018 World Touring Car Cup.

0 world titles, 0 wins, 0 pole positions, 38 starts.
