The 2006 season

Alonso Wins, Schumacher Says Goodbye

Fernando Alonso and Michael Schumacher won seven races each, and an engine failure in Japan decided the title as Schumacher prepared to retire.

The engines shrank and qualifying grew a new shape. For 2006 the three liter V10s gave way to 2.4 liter V8s, and qualifying became a knockout in three sessions. The story underneath was an old one: the young champion against the man he had dethroned. Renault and Ferrari won every race but one, and Fernando Alonso and Michael Schumacher finished with seven victories apiece.
