Tecno, From Karts to a Flat Twelve

Bologna's Pederzani brothers conquered karting and the junior formulas, then spent two difficult seasons in Formula One with their own engine.

Tecno began as a hydraulic pump business in Bologna owned by brothers Luciano and Gianfranco Pederzani, who turned to building karts and then racing cars. Their karts won world championships, their Formula Three cars won dozens of races, and Clay Regazzoni took the European Formula Two title for them in 1970. With backing from Count Rossi of Martini & Rossi, they built a Formula One car with a flat twelve engine of their own design.

Nanni Galli gave the car its debut at the 1972 Belgian Grand Prix, and Derek Bell also drove that year. In 1973 the partners fell out over the direction of the team, and Chris Amon arrived to drive a car designed by Alan McCall and Ron Tauranac. He finished sixth in Belgium for the team's only point. Tecno started 10 Grands Prix across those two seasons and made its last entry in Austria in 1973.
