François Cevert won the 1971 United States Grand Prix and finished second six times in 1973 as Jackie Stewart's teammate at Tyrrell.

François Cevert was born in Paris on 25 February 1944. He started on two wheels, racing scooters and then a Norton motorcycle, before turning to cars after his national service. In 1966 he won the Volant Shell scholarship at the Winfield Racing School at Magny Cours, which brought him an Alpine Formula Three car, and in 1968, now in a Tecno, he became French Formula 3 champion just ahead of Jean Pierre Jabouille.

Racing for the works Tecno Formula Two team in 1969, he finished third in the series and made his first World Championship appearance in the Formula Two class of the German Grand Prix. That year Jackie Stewart, after struggling to pass him in a Formula Two race at Crystal Palace, recommended him to Ken Tyrrell, and in 1970 Tyrrell brought him into its March team as Stewart's teammate.

His first full season with Tyrrell, 1971, brought his breakthrough. He finished second in France and Germany, third at Monza, and then won the United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen, ending the year third in the championship. After two second places in 1972, he was a regular front runner in 1973, finishing second six times and third once as Stewart won the title, and he ended the season fourth in the standings.

Cevert was killed in a crash during qualifying for the 1973 United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen on 6 October 1973. In 47 starts he scored 1 win, 2 fastest laps and 13 podiums.
