Mimmo Dei's Privateer From Modena

A Maserati dealer's private team, Scuderia Centro Sud raced for nine seasons and opened Formula One doors for several notable drivers.

Scuderia Centro Sud was founded in Modena by Guglielmo Dei, known as Mimmo, a former amateur driver who ran a Maserati dealership in Rome. The name joined the parts of Italy his two home cities belong to. From 1956 to 1965 it raced Maserati 250Fs, Maserati powered Coopers and later a BRM, and it scored points on its debut with Luigi Villoresi.

Masten Gregory's third place at the 1957 Monaco Grand Prix was the team's best result, and Tony Maggs also scored for it. Centro Sud was the first team to field a female driver, entering Maria Teresa de Filippis at the 1958 Portuguese Grand Prix, and Lorenzo Bandini made his Formula One debut with it in Belgium in 1961. Ian Burgess, Giorgio Scarlatti and Moisés Solana were among its many other drivers.
