South Africa's First Grand Prix Driver

Tony Maggs, the first South African to race in Formula One, finished second twice at the French Grand Prix for Cooper.

Born in Pretoria, Tony Maggs came through Formula Junior with Ken Tyrrell's team and made his World Championship debut at the 1961 British Grand Prix, becoming the first South African to take part in a Formula One Grand Prix.

Joining Cooper for 1962, he finished second at the French Grand Prix and third at his home South African Grand Prix, and he was second in France again in 1963. With a BRM run by Scuderia Centro Sud in 1964 he scored points twice from three starts. His last race was the 1965 South African Grand Prix, after 25 starts and three podiums. He died in 2009.
