The 2002 season

A Season Without a Rival

Michael Schumacher reached the podium at every race, won eleven of seventeen and wrapped up a fifth title in July, and the sport rewrote its rules in response.

Michael Schumacher stood on the podium at every one of the seventeen races of 2002. No other driver has done that through a full season, and the statistic describes the year better than any account of a title fight could, because there was hardly a fight to describe. From Albert Park in March to Suzuka in October, Ferrari won fifteen times. Schumacher was first or second everywhere except Malaysia, where he had to make do with third.
