The 2001 season

Schumacher's Record Margin, Häkkinen's Farewell

Michael Schumacher won his fourth title by a record 58 points as Juan Pablo Montoya, Kimi Räikkönen and Fernando Alonso arrived on the grid.

The 2001 grid had one eye on the future. Juan Pablo Montoya came to Williams with a CART title and an Indianapolis 500 win already to his name, Kimi Räikkönen joined Sauber almost directly from British Formula Renault, and Fernando Alonso made his debut at Minardi. Michelin returned to take on Bridgestone, opening a tire war, and from the Spanish Grand Prix fully automatic gearboxes, launch control and traction control were legal again, having been banned since 1994.
