Montoya between Indianapolis and Formula 1

Juan Pablo Montoya arrived in Formula 1 as a CART champion and Indianapolis 500 winner, won seven Grands Prix, then returned to American racing.

Juan Pablo Montoya was born in Bogotá, Colombia, on 20 September 1975, and began karting at five. He raced cars in Colombia and Mexico as a teenager, then in Britain, and in 1998 he won the International Formula 3000 championship with Super Nova Racing. He moved to America with Chip Ganassi Racing and won the CART title in his rookie season of 1999, then the Indianapolis 500 at his first attempt in 2000.

Williams brought him to Formula 1 in 2001, his debut coming at the Australian Grand Prix. Before that first season was over he had won the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. He collected seven podiums without a win in 2002, then won at Monaco and in Germany in 2003, and he closed his Williams years with victory at the 2004 Brazilian Grand Prix, the final round of that season.

A move to McLaren for 2005 brought three more wins, at Silverstone, at Monza and in Brazil, the last of them as part of a McLaren one two. He stayed for 2006 but left Formula 1 after the United States Grand Prix that July, his tenth race of the year, to join Chip Ganassi Racing in NASCAR.

Montoya's Formula 1 career totalled 94 starts, 7 wins, 13 pole positions, 12 fastest laps and 30 podiums, all with Williams and McLaren. In America he went on to win NASCAR Cup Series races, a second Indianapolis 500, the 2019 IMSA SportsCar Championship with Team Penske and the 24 Hours of Daytona three times.
