The 1997 season

Villeneuve, Schumacher and the Dry Sac Corner

Jacques Villeneuve and Michael Schumacher traded the lead all year, and the title was settled when the two collided in the final race.

Williams began 1997 in the unusual position of having let its champion go. Damon Hill had been replaced by Heinz Harald Frentzen and took the number 1 with him to Arrows, so Jacques Villeneuve now led the team. Bridgestone entered its first full season against Goodyear, the Stewart team arrived, and Ralf Schumacher joined his brother on the grid at Jordan. Seventeen rounds ran from Melbourne in March to Jerez in late October.
