The 1971 season

Stewart and the Tyrrell Come of Age

Jackie Stewart won six races in Ken Tyrrell's own car and took his second title by 29 points, while Monza produced the closest finish yet.

Ken Tyrrell had begun building his own cars late in 1970, and in 1971 they became the class of the field. Derek Gardner designed two nearly identical versions, one with a longer wheelbase to suit the tall François Cevert and one for Jackie Stewart. With Cosworth V8s behind the drivers, they took on the twelve cylinder Ferraris and BRMs and beat them, a reminder that cylinder count is not destiny.
