Jacky Ickx, Ferrari winner and Le Mans master

Jacky Ickx won eight Grands Prix and finished runner up twice, then became one of the most successful endurance racers of all, with six Le Mans wins.

Jacky Ickx was born in Brussels, Belgium, on 1 January 1945. He began in motorcycle trials, winning national and continental titles, moved into touring cars and won the 24 Hours of Spa in 1966. Ken Tyrrell then entered him in the 1966 German Grand Prix in a Formula Two Matra, the first of his championship starts.

Back at the Nürburgring in 1967 he qualified a Formula Two car third, and Cooper gave him a Formula 1 drive from the Italian Grand Prix, where he scored points. Ferrari signed him for 1968, and he won the French Grand Prix at Rouen for his first victory. A season with Brabham in 1969 brought wins in Germany and Canada and second place behind Jackie Stewart.

Returning to Ferrari for 1970, he won in Austria, Canada and Mexico and again finished runner up, this time to Jochen Rindt. Further Ferrari victories followed in the Netherlands in 1971 and at the Nürburgring in 1972, his last Grand Prix win. He left Ferrari partway through 1973 and drove for Lotus, Wolf Williams, Ensign and finally Ligier before stepping away after 1979 with 116 starts, 8 wins, 13 pole positions, 14 fastest laps and 25 podiums.

Sports cars brought him his greatest success. He won the 24 Hours of Le Mans six times, a record that lasted until 2005, took the 12 Hours of Sebring and the 24 Hours of Daytona, and won the World Endurance Championship with Porsche in 1982 and 1983. He also won the Dakar Rally in 1983.
