The 1970 season

Rindt's Points Stood to the End

Jochen Rindt won five races in the new Lotus 72 and was killed at Monza, and no rival overtook his total: the only posthumous championship.

The 1970 championship is remembered for how it ended, and for those who did not see the end of it. In June Bruce McLaren died testing a sports car at Goodwood, and later that month Piers Courage lost his life in the Dutch Grand Prix. In September, in practice at Monza, Jochen Rindt, who was leading the standings, crashed at the Parabolica and was killed. He remains the only driver to be made champion after his death.
