Victories at Kyalami and Spa

Pedro Rodríguez won Grands Prix for Cooper and BRM and was a winner at Le Mans and Daytona in sports cars.

Pedro Rodríguez was born in Mexico City, Mexico, on January 18, 1940. He and his younger brother Ricardo both began racing young, first on motorcycles and then in cars, and in 1961 they won the Paris 1000 km together in a Ferrari. Ricardo was killed in a racing accident in 1962, and Pedro considered stopping before deciding to carry on.

His first World Championship start came with Lotus at the 1963 United States Grand Prix. For several seasons he appeared mainly in the North American races, driving for Lotus and Ferrari, until a Cooper drive in 1967 gave him a full season. He opened it by winning the 1967 South African Grand Prix, in his first race for the team.

In 1968 he joined BRM and scored podiums in Belgium, the Netherlands and Canada, and that same year he won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in a Ford GT40. After a season split between BRM and Ferrari in 1969, he returned to BRM and won the 1970 Belgian Grand Prix at Spa, followed by second place at the 1970 United States Grand Prix. In sports cars he drove the Porsche 917, winning eight races across 1970 and 1971, and he won the 24 Hours of Daytona twice.

His final Grand Prix was the 1971 French Grand Prix. In July 1971 he was killed driving a Ferrari in a sports car race at the Norisring in West Germany. Our record shows 54 starts, 2 wins, 1 fastest lap and 7 podiums, with Lotus, Ferrari, Cooper and BRM.
