Jonathan Wheatley joined Benetton's mechanics as a junior in the early 1990s and was chief mechanic at Enstone from 2001 to 2006, a period in which the team won two constructors' titles. He then joined Red Bull as team manager in 2006 and became its sporting director in 2018.

All told he has a hand in eight constructors' championships between 1995 and 2023, which may make him the most decorated mechanic in the modern paddock. Audi chose him as its first team principal, and after an early release from Red Bull he started at Sauber on the 1st of April 2025, just in time for the Japanese Grand Prix that weekend. On the 20th of March 2026 Audi announced that he was leaving for personal reasons.
