Flavio Briatore came to Formula One from the fashion trade. He ran Benetton's clothing business in the United States, where the number of stores reached 800 by 1989, and he did not attend a Grand Prix until the last race of 1988. A year later the Benetton family put him in charge of the racing team's commercial side, and by 1991 he had full control.

He signed Michael Schumacher after the German's first race in 1991, and Schumacher was champion in 1994 and 1995. When Renault bought the team, Briatore came back in 2000 as managing director and later brought Fernando Alonso into the car. Across his years at Enstone the team won three constructors' and four drivers' titles. In May 2024 he came back once more as an executive adviser, soon running Alpine in all but name. Not bad for a man who once found racing uninteresting.
