Dietrich Mateschitz was selling toothpaste for Blendax when he tried a Thai drink called Krating Daeng on the way in from Bangkok airport and found his jet lag gone. In 1984 he and Chaleo Yoovidhya created Red Bull GmbH, and the drink went on sale in Austria in 1987, building it into the world's leading energy drink.

In November 2004 he bought the struggling Jaguar Racing team from Ford for one dollar, and in 2005, with Gerhard Berger, he bought Minardi, which became Toro Rosso. Sebastian Vettel won for Toro Rosso at Monza in 2008 and gave Red Bull Racing its first win in China in 2009, and from 2010 the senior team won four consecutive doubles. He watched most races on television despite owning two teams. He died on the 22nd of October 2022.
