Two Poles for Vanwall

Stuart Lewis Evans took two pole positions and two podiums for Vanwall in 1957 and 1958 before a fatal crash in Morocco.

Born in Luton, Stuart Lewis Evans started racing in a Cooper 500 in 1951. He made his World Championship debut for Connaught at the 1957 Monaco Grand Prix, finishing fourth, and then joined Vanwall, taking pole at the Italian Grand Prix that year.

In 1958 he started from pole at the Dutch Grand Prix and finished third in Belgium and Portugal, with fourth at the British Grand Prix. At the season finale in Morocco his engine seized and he crashed, suffering burns from which he died days later. He made 14 starts in all, with two poles and two podiums.
